  2. process of respiration by which food
  3. molecules are broken down in aerobic
  4. organisms. Cytochromes are part of the
  5. electron transport chain, which uses
  6. energized electrons to reduce molecular
  7. oxygen (O2) to oxygen ions (O2-). These
  8. combine with hydrogen ions (H+) to form water
  9. (H2O), the end product of aerobic
  10. respiration. As electrons are passed from one
  11. cytochrome to another energy is released and
  12. used to make ATP.
