A type of protein responsible for part of the
process of respiration by which food
molecules are broken down in aerobic
organisms. Cytochromes are part of the
electron transport chain, which uses
energized electrons to reduce molecular
oxygen (O2) to oxygen ions (O2-). These
combine with hydrogen ions (H+) to form water
(H2O), the end product of aerobic
respiration. As electrons are passed from one
cytochrome to another energy is released and
used to make ATP.
